Bird bath/lime

I want to make a bird bath, but I'm worried about the lime in the cement burning the feet of the poor birdies!

If I make a bird bath, how do I cure it and make sure there are no harmful chemicals left?

We are very new at this, but are having some fun!

We started out with some garden stepping stones, which we didn't cure, so they broke! LOL

Next are some planters!

Wish me luck, and help me out as much as you can!

I use portland and sand mix ( not really hypertufa _ - Mix and apply to the mold. Next day remove the mold. Keep moist for several days - 2 weeks better. Then get a big tub and fill with water and soak the bird bath. Dump the water occasionally. Add clean water. This should remove any residue from the new cement.
If you think about it there are lots of bird baths that are made commercially and used daily, and it seems that the birds are ok - hope this helps -

Thanks Mike. I'm guessing I was just impatient on the stepping stones, and that's why they broke.
I'll be more careful and cure the birdbath longer! NT

Well I don't know, I didn't think the lime would be THAT bad for the birdies? I'd think you are a little too worried there, if not I'd like a little education on this myself.
