How thick?

Ok, I went to the weirdest yard sale on earth and came home with 6 huge plastic globes with metal bases(big light fixture globes) about 18" in diameter. I am using them as the base for some big hypertufa globes. I need to know how thick I need to put on the Hypertufa so that it wont crack or scale off in the future. I have been using a 1:1:1 mix of Portland, sand and Vermiculite since I want them to be heavy enough to not roll away when the winter winds start up. I also got some fiberglass molds for birdbaths and so forth-I spent $4.25. I dont think that will happen again..anyway I would appreciate your thoughts since all I have done before is make troughs.

I'm curious. How thick did you make them. Any pictures? Sounds like a good find!

For the ones I leave on the plastic globe I am making an inch or so. I am working on using one of the globes as a mold to see if I can make them just hollow..those will be 2 inches. I think if I dont put them directly behind my house where it can get frost heave in the winter(no sun) in my temperate climate that ought to be ok...they are pretty heavy at 1" being so large. I am thinking of trying the perlite mixture...having fun in any case...and many disasters as I try to push the limit on how much I can put on at any one time-round surfaces are hard. I should eventually have some pictures.

patricae, if you put the word Spheres in the search box here it's possible you can find lots of expert help there that can help you with your questions; I've never made these but plan too in the future! I know that several people on this forum have made these using glass globes and balloons.
