Can't find supplies

Hey, all

Sunrise, florida here. Been googling for days and I can't seem to find any suppliers for vermiculite, perlite, etc.

Not even the nurseries seem to be carrying them. I've made trips in vein, nada, no luck whatsoever.

I think maybe I have the wrong search criteria. Any advice?

What large city are you near? Billie

I would not expect nurseries to have it in large bags. Here in Alabama most feed and seed stores have it. I googled your area and there seems to be good number of feed stores nearby.

Good grief, is Sunrise the name of your town?! I thought you were up at sunrise, you know, couldn't sleep. Duh!
Anyway I was going to do the same as Fred, look for feed stores. That's where I get mine but most people don't want to buy a 3 or 4 yard bag. Masonary supply companies also carry vermiculite. Billie

    LOL... Sorry, guys

Yes, it's Sunrise, (Ft. Lauderdale, FL). I will try googling "Feed and Seed, Broward", or something, see if my luck changes. I find in 99% of searches, it's all about using the right words.

Good news is, I finally found Peat Moss. This is like a scavenger hunt :-)

    Thanks!

"..most people don't want to buy a 3 or 4 yard bag.."

I don't blame them! I could probably lift a 3-4 yard bag of perlite, if I could get a hold on it, but I doubt if it'd even fit inside my huge van.

I don't know where you got the idea bags of perlite and vermiculite are so large. They are not over a foot in diameter and about 31/2 feet long. They contain two cu. ft. and weigh only a few pounds. We can buy them in Alabama at most any feed store for about twelvwe dollars.

I checked out my bags of Perlite and Vermiculite again. They are four cubic feet. The vermiculite weighs 28lbs. the perlite is much lighter, but no weight on the bag.

    Well, I hit the jackpot

After about a month of searching online, looking in stoors, I finally found a store with White Portland Cement.

Turns out that my closest HD doesn't have it, but that doesn't mean none of them do. I called up one not so close and they had it. I noticed it was a much larger store, so I decided to venture into the gardening section, and there they were: Peat Moss, Vermiculite, Perlite, and huge bags of them. I felt like a kid in the candy store!

    Stupid Home Depot!

I went in today to buy Vermiculite and Perlite. They didn't have it anymore. Only 2 weeks after I saw it.

This I don't understand, they had loads of it!

Go to Agway's website, enter your zip code in the top right of the home page, and see if there's a store near you.

My local Agway doesn't stock Perlite or Vermiculite, but If I call them on Tuesday, they get it in by Thursday. 4CUFT bags.

Here is a link that might be useful: Agway

amaretto, You don't have any masonry supply houses in Sunrise? They should have white portland in stock.
What happened with the feed store?
Maybe Home Depot puts the bigger bags away for the Winter or holiday season. Did you ask if they had any in stock?
I've never tried this source but someone on this forum said they use vermiculite under the liners of pools. Maybe a pool contractor could help. Check out building supplies, don't know if it's still available but they use to sell bags of vermiculite to pour into the cavities of cinder blocks for insulation. It was chunkier than horticulture grade vermiculite but you can crush it. Wear a mask! Billie

    Great tip, Donn

There's an Agway about 10 miles from where I live.

    Thanks!

I finally found perlite at a cement block outfit. The hunt's the thing! tally ho!

I was at my local HD yesterday, and said: "What do I have to lose?" Stopped by the garden section and they had some nice perlite. I got a huge bag for $9. No vermiculite, tho.

    Hunt hunt hunt :-)

ebay is the solution to all my problems these days. I just looked for vermiculite and found several listings.

    Good Luck

Hello, I have a friend who owns a small garden center and she orders big bags of vermiculite for me when she orders her supplies. I can't order directly because I no longer have a tax number but perhaps you could approach a nursery about getting it for you.

No mystery here. Feed and Seed stores around here carry both perlite and vermiculite in 4cuft bags.
