Is It Just Me???...

...or does anyone else find the latest "Pop-Ups" exceptionally annoying? I understand that all this has gotta' get paid for somehow (Hell, I was in advertising for 30 years!) But do the morons who create these overly aggressive, aggrevating, in-your-face intrusions into every step of writing a simple note actually think they are making a positive impression on anyone with such tactics? And not just here, but anywhere they are employed in such a fashion. They rank right up there with "Fragrance Demonstrators" in department stores and Hari Krishna in airports. Advertising yes...I very often find something I'm intersted in thanks to "ads"...but someone please tell the originators of this particular type of promoting that it just makes enemies of people who might otherwise be engaged. And while that's just my personal opinion on the subject, it is an educated opinion.

No-no just you. This subject of being subjected to those highly intrusive ads has come up before, under the premise of being the way the site is paid for if you don't subscribe.I totally agree with you!
What if...the ads actually had anything to do with what WE talk about on the forum?Food for Spike's thought.
Merry Xmas from anther of the annoyed!

Unfortunately the popup ads do work.
Even TV networks are doing the same.
The other day I tried to watch a movie with subtitles and the popup ads along the bottom covered much of the dialog.

I can't imagine trying to read wedsites on a dialup these days. It has to be very frustrating.

Advertisers are just as stupid as the rest of the population. If Madison Ave. thinks it's a good idea, the businesses think it's a good idea, whether it is or not. In case you hadn't noticed, there are a LOT of business people out there who haven't got the brains of dryer lint.
And iVillage is one of the top bird-brains. They don't care who they chase away, because WE are not their main concern. The companies they sell the advertising to are their ONLY concern. We are just numbers.

But I only come over here once every few weeks now, and even then I don't spend much time here. It's too slow, the advertising is irritating, and most of the really creative people have drifted on... maybe for the same reasons.

Too bad, so sad. It used to be a good site, but with Spike's ego and iVillage's advertising, it's really ceased to be an interesting site.

Spike-any response?Anything at all?I believe Sue is right-people are drifting away.I'm still finding good people and good ideas circulated here, but then I'm a glutton for punishment!I'll take on the ads, toss them aside, say a curse, and then read what people are talking about.
Perhaps a review of the forum might be in order.Ask ,oh, how's about US(!!) what we want, what we expect from this forum and what could be done to make it better. Then, people like Sue wouldn't turn away.
Thanks for considering all the thoughts expressed in this thread.
    Cheers from here

Ummm...I subscribed, because I thought it was quite good value for access to such a large site. Sites have to be paid for somehow. If the site doesn't sell products, then it has to sell ad-space or get subscriptions in order to cover its costs and make a profit.

That's my take on it, anyway.

Try disabling your Java script in your browser settings (leave the Java alone). It solved the problem of the STUPID Kohl's ad popping up, haven't noticed anything else being affected... yet...

Would using a browser like Mozilla Firefox help with the pop-ups? And yea, I should subscribe too.

Merry Christmas! My little venture actually made money this year. I wish health and happiness to all.

Mercedes, FF gets most of them but this one is persistant. Disabling the Java script works like a charm, although it does stop some desirable things from working... can't have everything.

Congratulations on your money making venture. That must be a GREAT feeling of accomplishment!

Best wishes for an even more prosperous 2006!

Firefox with adblock even fixed the kohls one for me, I didn't have to disable java script.

    I have not seen a Kohl's ad.
I wonder if the ads respond to the IPs of the reader.

Iffen I subscribe, do the floatie ads go far, far away?

Try Maxthon Browser...since someone suggested it, it has proved a godsend. No pop-ups...none. Gardenweb and all others are a pleasure.

Just Google it, and download and you'll be set to go.

Quote Rockyn - "Iffen I subscribe, do the floatie ads go far, far away?"

I don't see any floaty ads on here, so I guess they do!

I haven't seen any of these ads, floaters or not, and I'm not a subscriber. All I have is Google's pop up blocker, apparently it works quite well. The little iVillage "take our survey" apparition did appear one time but I nixed it and it's never returned.
I'm going to look into some of the other freebies mentioned here. Sort of like curb shopping on the Internet!
