Cut a wedge on each end. Make the wedge with 2 cuts, one on each side, except one side will have a longer cut (about 1 inch), and the other one will have a shorter cut (about half an inch). The scion is wedged in there and tacked (use copper or stainless tacks) with the longer cut side going inward, and the bark goes over the shorter cut. Make several bridge grafts as some may fail. Tape over the graft tightly as bugs (especially ants) often like to eat the forming scar tissue.

Also, you may want to protect young trees in the future. After trying several different things, I have found that black flexible corrugated drain hose works great. Cut it down the side and tie it it place with twine, if necessary. Good luck.

thanks for answering so soon. I am finishing my project now. Only could spare enough scion from a few cuttings from the top and side of my willow tree but am going to go find more from another older willow tree. Some of the grafts will have to be very long because the deer damage was so much, a foot or two and part of the tree over the damage seems a bit different already but will try and see what happens.
