Plant I.D:)

Does anyone know what this plant is? I was forced to go out and buy another plant (yeah right) I thought it looked kind of like a Begonia, but someone else said Dinnerplate Arelia, any clues? And yes I take terrible pictures, don't be shy come on out and tell me I can't use a camera:) the picture is kind of sideways (sorry again I forgot to edit befor going to photobucket and I am clueless how to do it there) wish I could get it bigger, but it is clickable! a plus dont ya think?? lol! it has a woody trunk at the base almost like a small tree. any help would be much appreciated:)

Thank you guys so much:) Now the next step is to keep it looking nice, I have never had one like this before, Wal-Mart buy, it was the only one there, I shoved it back behind all the others (as I was assuming I would have to make a "secret" trip back the next day) ran to get hubby who was in there to buy a lawn mower spark plug, dragged him over there to see it, and he told me to go ahead and get it (he should know better then to park in the greenhouse area, I think he was just happy I wanted a small one) he did kind of rush me out of there once I had it in my hands, he was probably wishing he had a blindfold with him, lol!

I love these plants! Sometimes they are also called Balfour Aralia. I bought a larger one from HD last year (maybe the most expensive plant I ever bought), and it developed mushy trunk syndrome about a month later and died on me. And I didn't save the receipt! Oh well. Learned my lesson on that one.

Congrats on your gorgeous new plant!

LOL Micke, deja vu..I think most of our spouses wish they brought blindfolds when we go shopping..LOLOL
We went to Walmart last night..they had a little rock-like planter w/3 types of Tills inside..no price..so I brought up front for a price ck, they wanted 12,99..not worth it..so we left Walmart empty-handed..then we went food shopping..lol..of course, looked at the plants, and wouldn't u know it, they had 1 Oyster plant in a 4" pot..I already have a small one, so figured I'd plant the two together. Every so often, something different shows up.

Pepperomia, Aralia's need to dry between waterings..did u overwater? Was soil too heavy?
Yep, you're right they are called Balfour Aralias, but depending on their shape (type) they have a second name like Fabian, Dinner Plate which has huge, round leaves..I picked up a pretty Aralia at HD a couple wks back..it's mostly yellow w/round leaves..Toni

Good to know on the watering, thank you Toni:)
I did end up picking up another houseplant Saturday, it is a Varigated Ginger Lily, Lowes had their big houseplants priced at 7.98:) They had a China Doll too but I seen the bright light tag on it, and I am really running out of windows:( I need to really say enough is enough and exert more energy and money into repotting, prettier pots and learning ALL the care tips for the ones I have, at this point I need about 20 nice hanging planters, so I am going to "try" to remember that the next time I see another plant I want

I can't see the pic, but if it's a Balfour Aralia, that's one of my all time favorites plants.

It like bright, but indiorect light; a bit tricky to water, try once a wk to start & it will benefit from a pebble tray underneath. This plant does not care for bright sun nor will it survive overwatering.

Micke, did you get a variegated ginger or variegated lily? Var ginger is a fantastic plant..rub fingers across leaves and smell..it's so fragrant..got mine in 94..it's about 3' tall..I had to cut back last winter, but new leaves are growing out..it's outside now enjoying summer..So, which do u have? Toni

So what do you think? It does seem to have a smell to it almost like cloves maybe?

    DUH! Smells like ginger maybe?

That is gorgeous. Mine was big when I got last summer. I put it in the laundry room over the winter. It is starting to grow back now but not big yet.

Micke, now that's a variegated ginger..smells great doesn't it? Rub your finger and thumb across leaves and smell the scnet..Toni

It does smell good:) What does the varigated lily look like? Is it a type of Peace Lily? There is 1 more plant of that size that I have been eyeballing at HD. Waiting for the price to drop from 20 bucks (in my dreams, they don't seem to drop prices even if the plant is dead) It has dark green leaves with white varigation through it, it has blooms on it exactly like a peace lily, but it wasn't marked a spath, I remember that much, wish I could remember what it was called:( I am going to go back and look at it again this weekend (sigh)

Micke, could it be a Canna or Calla Lily? Toni
