This large kitchen is located literally at the center of a sprawling California home--and in this 25' x 25' area alone, there are 6 separate doors or openings leading out of the space. In this photo you can see 2 of them: the arched opening to the garage hallway is visible at the back left corner. Just to the left of that arch is an entrance to the walk-in pantry. Continuing on, at the left of the range area (but not visible in the photo) is the main entrance to the kitchen, then an arched opening into a butler's pantry, an arched opening to an eating nook, and an arched opening to the family room (off to the right in the above photo). With all these openings, we had limited wall room, and we decided to bring the main activity of the kitchen out in the center of the room and onto the 2 islands. Both are about 8' long by 4' wide, with the first, rectangular island designated as the "work" island, and the second arched & decorated island designated as the "entertaining" island.
