Over wintering Peanut plants in the garden.

I have not dug few peanut plants from the back yard garden soil to over winter to study the effect of snow and freezing temperatures of winter. I believe that the seeds inside the hard shells of nuts will not freeze.Let us see what happens to peanuts at the end of the winter.

I have found that the peanuts survive fine in the soil over the winter, and that there are quite a few sprouts in the spring. You do want to thin the plants once they get going, because there may be quite a few more than you want. However, do wait until well after your last frost, because some of the peanuts may come up before damaging frosts are over, and will be killed. Other seeds will sprout later, still giving you a crop. For what it is worth, the shells rot over the winter, but the seeds seem to be just fine.

I predict that the shells will be intact in spring, but the seeds inside will have rotted.

To improve your chance of success, I would cover the plants with something that will shed rain so the soil will stay reasonably dry.

Thanks to all for sharing your experience.
Wayne_5 , my objective is to see if the seeds in the hard shell will not be frozen to be useless for planting next year.Maryland's winter is really harsh for this.If this works then I will not need to buy peanut seeds .
We usually boil the peanuts in the shell till cooked and freeze them to be used for year round. These frozen peanuts do not turn
mushy or pulpy.This encouraged me to do this experiment.

Chaman, harvest the seeds and store them in a cool, dry location for the winter. You'll not have to buy more seeds.

Thanks rhizo_1.I have place few pods into freezer for test run.
Every year we find few left over pods from last year's peanut plot.These pods are usually in god shape in unrotten condition like fresh ones.
Secondly I intend to keep few plants into soil till first week of June 1915 to see if the seeds in the pods start to germinate.

Slimy_Okra: It looks like that.Trying to save time for storage seeds and if seeds (in ground attached to plants) start germinating by end of next May little more time and labor will be saved.

I know this is a very old thread, but I’m curious how your experiment turned out. I feed peanuts to my critters in the backyard all summer long and I know the squirrels and chipmunks won’t be able to consume all the nuts they buried. I’m curious to see if any will survive the winter and sprout next season. ❤️
