I received a few questions about my rustic arbor (The picture is below.) with encouragement to see the fence.

The BEST thing about the arbor and fence is that all of the wood is recycled from construction sites nearby. The wood was actually in burn piles! I keep adding these fences all around our property... ENJOY! Kirk

Absolutely delightful and enchanting. I'm sure a lot of work involved for you. I love seeing your photos and yard so much.

Kirkus, I didn't even have to open your post because when I saw you had posted "Rustic Fence" - I just knew "this is going to be good" - and OMG, it's incredible!!!! I love that fence soooooo much, I WANT ONE. The birdhouses separating the sections are "the cream on top of the pie." Yard is gorgeous, house is gorgeous, gardens are gorgeous -- I can't say it better than that. I could only wish my place looked like the paradise you have created.

    Kirk,
I love it too. I bookmarked your photos to show my husband when he gets back. This is exactly the look I wanted for our yard. Beautiful!! Keep showing pictures so I can build things for my yard. Lol.

KIRK: WHAT A PARADISE you've created. I LOVE it all. I hope you're teaching some of your philosophy about creative recycling to your students. It is so nice to see the wonderful ways you use things that would have been tossed out. You are VERY talented. Love your homesite.

You know I use to enjoy watching things like landscapers challenge but artisans like you make me prefer this forum!

Well everybody, especially Crafylady and craftyjan, said everything I was gonna say, except...are you adopting??heh heh!!! I bet you could build a little addition to your house outta recycled stuff and we'd all take turns using it as a vacation/inspiration spot!!!! Jane

Kirkus -- AWESOME fence. I would love to create something like that around our cabin. I'm curious what type of wood you used and if you used any sort of sealant on it to stop it from rotting. Please do tell!

    Sincerely, Squirrellypete

Squirrellypete, Thanks for the compliment! I cemented each post in the ground and haven't had an issue of rotting. I didn't treat the wood otherwise. I used River Birch trees. I also purchased a book called Making Bentwood Trellises, Arbors, Gates, and Fences by Jim Long which gave me LOTS of ideas! Good Luck! Kirk

Hi Kirkus. Thanks for the info. I was just reading your Rustic Arbor post for the first time and saw your details there as well. I wish we had River Birch and Cedar Trees where I live. Aside from pine, most of the trees around here are Poplar and Maple but I'm not sure how those woods hold up in the elements.

Great job on everything. Your obelisk is also very cool!

I want to thank-you so much for the follow up on your "fence" I just love all the pictures, and am so envious, you and your wife have a darling yard. My husband and I live in the mountains also, and was wondering are those pine-logs or other types of trees? By the way you diffinately are in "my-favorites-file"...Thanks again

i have to say kurkus, that is amazing.. It had to take alot of time and patience to do that. what great talent...i especially like the branches in between and also the bird houses...awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know everyone else said the same thing but, it's absolutely beautiful!

Great job, kirkus! I have the same Jim Long book and love the natural looking arbors, trellises, etc. I added some of your pics to my garden inspiration file (for when I have a yard to fence - lol). Thank you so much for sharing!

What a surprise to see this posting bumped back up! Nana 3, I used River Birch trees...all recycled from construction projects in the area. A new house is going in about a mile from here...I brought home a truckload of branches and old weathered wood today! TREASURES!!!! The workers were glad to be rid of it, and I was happy to have it! Thanks everyone for your encouraging words. Oh, I have to say that Carol, my wife, was teaching our daughter to drive last winter and got out of the car while it was in DRIVE...went right through the fence. Oh, how I wish I would have taken a picture! Wouldn't that be fun in our Christmas newsletter?! :o) Easy to repair though and no one was hurt! :o) Kirk

I'm so glad this got bumped up as I missed it the first time. How wonderful your fences and arbors are. I'd like to do this in our yard as well, but it seems like an intimidating project. We'll have to check out the book you mentioned. Thanks for sharing.

    Nice, nice, nice! Love it!

And...the rocky setting for the white bench is wonderful! It reminds me of my parent's place in New Hampshire.

Sandy, here's a link the story behind that bench... :o) Kirk

Here is a link that might be useful: White Bench

Thanks, Kirk. I enjoyed reading about the bench and seeing some of your other pictures. I've missed so much, as I haven't been able to keep up with the Junk forum this past year due to hip and leg pain that makes it very difficult to sit at the computer for any length of time. I need a laptop! :)

Is there some kind of wooden horse to the left of the bench? I can't make out what it is.

What a lovely peaceful place to sit and unwind from a busy day.

Every time we would go to NH to visit my parents, my four daughters and I would each bring back rocks from their yard. Not nearly as big as the ones you have, but all we could transport 800 miles. My parents are gone now, but we all have their rocks in our gardens. Memories, memories, memories!

    ~Sandy~

Sandy, thank you for the nice compliments. I'm so sorry to hear about your pains and will pray for you. I love your sweet rock story. I have several "memory rocks" in our gardens to remind me of family and friends. That's an eagle next to the bench...a gift from one of my students. I posted him below. Please take care. Hope to see you posting again soon. Kirk
