Soil Test - do I believe it?

I had a soil test done by the State Extension this fall. The results basically said that my soil was in good shape though my PH is 7.3. This is interesting for two reasons. The first is that the plants that did the best in the garden are those that require a low PH. Cukes did great to the point of me leaving some in the garden because we couldn't use them all. I have read that cukes like PH between 5 and 6. The rest of the plant sucess is consistant with a low PH. The second reason that I have some doubt in the test is one that I'm sure that most in here would disagree with. I bought one of those electronic PH testers and got a reading of about 5.5 consistantly. What do I believe?
