I doubt anyone can give you a solid answer on your question. My Nikita's Gift is doinging something similar. Most growth would have been long over, but I've noticed that it's put out a new 2 foot leader. I'm hoping the new wood will have lignified before cold weather, but if not, I can just trim the dead part back.

I'm glad you're seeing the same thing. I've got 2 stems putting forth new growth, each one has probably added 12-18 inches. (considering how slow growth has been on this tree, so far, I'm partly glad to see it).

Though, if I recall correctly, you're in a better zonal position for new growth to survive a winter than I am.

My three Asian persimmons, planted bareroot in spring, 2007, have continued to grow all summer long. I don't know how much of the newer growth will make it through the winter, but if some doesn't will just prune it off as Gene suggests.

I don't know what I would do about it if I wanted to stop it. BTW, I had some leaf curling on the trees earlier in the summer, and one spray with permethrin from a hand trigger sprayer stopped it completely, whatever it was. May have been the persimmon psylla that bothers Scottsmith. If it was, I sure can't see it.
