Is that wood laminate on the steps?

the steps where I am moving are currently painted purple I would like to spice them up a little

idea for a variation on the numbering scheme: use the height from waterline to ceiling clearance like is posted on bridges on waterways. first one would be 8 or 10 ft or whatever, next 7, then 6, and so on. Sail boaters would get it right away.
