Garlic sprouting

What do I do now? I have grass mulch over most of the area that I planted Garlic, and when I pulled back the mulch to look today, I found a Garlic was sprouting. I put the mulch back on top, but I'm not sure what I do now.

It's close to 50 F today, and it's supposed to hover around this area for a while. The last real cold we had was late November, but it has been cooler than normal in the first half of December.

I've never grown Garlic before, so I just want opinions.

Same here thanks to the unusual weather. I just add more straw mulch on top of it all. It does fine.

Garlic handles cold extremely well. Here in zone 5 it has little problem making it through the winter with only an inch or two of mulch.

The best hardneck varieties take -50F after they have sprouted. If the mulch is matted and you think it will not break down by spring, pull it back because it suffocates the sprouts. Otherwise, leave it alone. My garlic is 15 inches now, and it will take a Michigan winter as is.

15 inches? That's insane. Do you have any pictures? I'd like to see that.

It was hardneck Garlic that I planted. I planted Red Russian garlic.

They will do fine.It is not uncommon for such long shoots in zone 8b.
