Cedar apple rust killing a tree.

Can Cedar apple rust Kill a one year grafted whip? Some of my grafts got what appeared to be Cedar apple rust. They were alive for awhile after they were defoliated but now have turned to a nice crispy brown and a are dead What Could have cased this was it simply just Cedar apple rust and the tree can't live with out leaves? and therefore died? Or is there some other diease that does this? I didn't know that cedar apple rust could kill a tree? Also The funny thing is that it happens to all trees of the same kind and leaves the others right next it alone. Both hollow long and bernerosen are dead and so is ben davis and westfield seek no further along with snow famuse and few others. Yellow transparent is untouched and so is dorsett golden and tompkins county king which are heard are car magnents.

any advice would appricated

thanks
