wind and overwintering

I have three semi-dwarf apple trees in 25 gallon containers. I need to overwinter them but they are too large to keep indoors (they doubled in size in a single year). Is it possible that I could wrap the containers in burlap and black plastic to keep the heat around the roots but leave the rest exposed? I mean the tree is rated for zone 5, so I assume that the recommendation to keep overwintered trees out of the wind is meant for plants that can't take the zone you're in. Am I right? The only reason I need to overwinter it is because it's in a container, not because my region is too cold. An apple tree should be fine in the wind shouldn't it?
