Lighting

I used to have a gecko who passed. He lived in a cage that is built into a cabinet. The cage has a reptile lamp with a two 9 watt bulbs attached to the roof of the cage. I plan to turn this cage into a little seed starting spot. And for the plants to live inside a little. Im not sure what i want to grow in it yet. A window is nearby so some light will get to it that way. But what im getting at is, will these 9 watt bulbs be enough for some seedlings or do I need to add something else? Is there special plant bulbs? I understand every plant will have different light requirements, so I just want something thats a good medium. I have no clue about indoor lighting becuase i've never done it. Thanks

There is a forum here on Gardenweb for just such questions. It's the Growing Under Lights Forum and I'll attach a link below.

There are a lot of variables in your question (type of bulb, area you want to cover, distance from bulb to seedling, etc). I'd recommend reading through a few threads over in the above mentioned forum, and I think you will find that helpful in determining what you need to look at (variables involved).

I use florescent lamps to start seedlings off. I use bulbs with a wavelength corresponding to somewhere around 5000K (close to natural outdoor light). Each of my 4' X 2' shelves is equipped with six 40-watt bulbs. I have each fixture suspended so that the distance between the bulb and plant can remain minimal while the plant continues to grow.

Thanks Brandon I will check out that forum, I was looking for something like it but couldn't find it so I just posted it here. And thanks for your follow ups on my understanding hybrids and f1s. Your last example really helped.

No problem. BTW, I never heard from you about the pawpaw seeds (from you post on the Seed Exchange Forum). Are you still wanting some?

oh sorry i have just been checking my email, not my post. I shouldve though.... But about the seeds, yeah Im somewhat interested, but Im going to be ordering pawpaws from intergration farms and I can just take those seeds. But what would you want for like a few of them? I really dont have much at all, I just started this seed/plant exchange thing. Ive got some orange and lemon saplings, some golden rain tree seeds, tiger lily seeds, and some red pear seed. Like I said, its not much, nor is any of it valuable what so ever.
