Apple identification help needed

17 years ago

I have a dwarf apple tree that has four grafts: Fiesta, Chehalis, William's Pride, and Liberty. However, I'm not certain which is which. This is the first year I've gotten fruit from this tree, and three of the four grafts produced. The three kinds of apples were very different looking: one was large and almost looked like a Granny Smith but was more yellowish-green; one was medium size and medium red with a strong fragrance and white flesh that was streaked with red; and one was smaller, red in color, but with a partial greenish area, and is the last one to ripen. Can any one hazard a guess, or point me to a web site that has photos of apples by name? Thanks.

    The last to ripen could be a Liberty. My Libertys are fragrant and white fleshed, but don't streak. They're on the small side, and could pass for Macintoshes.

    Hi Kudzu9-
    There is a site like you mention that is pretty good, but somehow it's missing all of the varieties that you mention except for liberty. Anyway, see the link below.

    Instead, I would do a Google Image search on your varieties. Varieties can look different under different growing conditions, so often 1 picture isn't enough.

    Do you have any pics of the apples? If so, I bet people here could identify them.

    My 2 good Williams Pride's were very large. If you look at my "My Page" link, so can see a pic of one of my WP's before it went fully red once it was ripe.

    As Marknmt says, Liberty doesn't ever get all that large.

    Hope this helps...

    Thanks for the info. Well, I went out to the tree today and saw that the 4th graft had put out two apples I hadn't noticed before. I also took pictures of all four types to see if that can help. The one that I didn't describe before is smallish, and mainly green, with some modest red patches; here it is:

    Apple 4 -

    Here are the other three in the order I tried to describe them in my first post:

    Apple 1 [this looks more yellowish out in the sunlight] -
    {{gwi:124721}}

    Apple 2 [this is actually larger rather than the medium size I first mentioned] -
    {{gwi:124722}}

    Apple 3 -
    {{gwi:124723}}

    Group shot -
    {{gwi:124724}}

    So...Fiesta, Chehalis, William's Pride, Liberty...which is which?

    I just found a very helpful apple ID site [see link below].

    I think that the big, yellow-green one is clearly a Chehalis. I have theories about the other three, but want to hear what others think. Thanks.

    Either of the two red ones could be a Liberty, but I'd vote for the upper right.

    Nice pics! In the group shot, my guess would be:

    Upper Left: Fiesta
    Upper Right: Liberty
    Lower Left: Chehalis
    Lower Right: Williams Pride.

    I grow L & WP, but the info I saw on F & C seem to fit well with your pics.

    I've been doing a little more reading and thinking, and I believe you nailed it. Thanks for confirming my hunches.
