Nectarine choices

I just got back from a trip to my favorite nursery, and picked up many potted trees and shrubs to go into my new orchard this fall. I did hit a few snags trying to get varieties they normal grow but won't be available again until past the best planting time for me (a couple of hours north of them.)

For nectarines, they only had "Red Gold" and "Flavor Top." I am looking for a yellow freestone nectarine, preferably one that blooms a bit late since we tend to get late frosts many years. I don't need a high yield variety since this is for home eating, but good pest and disease resistance is desired. With the exception of bacterial spot, Red Gold seems to be a match. I do not have any nearby orchards or even neighbors with fruit trees so it disease pressure will probably be low to start with. But it reportedly doesn't like hard clay subsoil, which I definitely have, with somewhat acidic cherty silt loam on top and good drainage.

Should I take a chance with the Red Gold, or can someone recommend a better variety?
