Is my red currant dead?

Hello. I recently transplanted some red and black currants from my mother's yard, hacking off some roots but keeping the main roots in the process (baby plant was attached to mama). Planted them and watered them regularly for the past few weeks (maybe too much, given our wet autumn). The black currants have since developed some green buds, which is a little worrisome, but presumably they'll realize soon that winter is coming. The red currants, however, look like sad dead sticks coming out of the ground, with no leaves and no buds.

How can I know if my red currants are actually alive vs. just dormant? Do currants always look like lifeless sticks at this time of year?

Thanks!
