I used it last fall, the grass came up nicely and it looks good this year, although I wish it was a bit darker, but it's TF, not KBG. Make sure that you check the label, if it has any annual bluegrass listed then forget it. Home Depot carries a Pennington Tall Fescue blend that is a bit more in price, it has only three cultivars unlike Vigoro's six to eight, and is usually free of annual bluegrass. The cultivars I've seen are of a much higher quality such as Justice, Rebel IV, Rebel Exeda, Penn 1901, Greystone, etc. I think the Pennington is worth the higher price as Vigoro's cultivars are just a hodgepodge of what they have on hand, even though they do throw in a small percentage of RTF.

Noxious weed seed? Wow that's a turn off. For clueless beginners like me reading the label is a good idea. Thanks for the warnings! I've been using a Pennington product exclusively. Today the guy at the local Ace hardware in town suggested Penningtons Dense shade seed mix. This could be an option as he claims a lawn guy uses it all the time after being the guniea pig when it first came out. Lottsa shade in these hills.

Considering I have some areas that get very little sunshine and one area that gets about six hours I'm wondering how well this will work?

Thanks. Some creeping red in the mix isn't a bad idea, especially for the shadiest areas. The Vigoro I used actually did very well in the shadiest part of my front yard, probably only gets 4 morning hours max. The problem with a lot of shade mixes is that often they will incorporate rye grass, both perennial and annual. They look great for a few weeks, but then they die due to the lack of sun, and the annual dies off as expected. In my opinion the only thing that should be in dense shade mixes are fescues. Take a look at the label and see what they include in the mix. I actually don't have any pics up. I am going to do a total renovation on a 1500 sq. ft area that gets about 3 or 4 hours of morning sun. I tried to go all fine fescue this spring on it. Scraped off all the old poa annua, weeds, moss, etc. and regraded it as best I could. Planted it in April and a reseed in May, but with all the rain while it was seed, I got minimal results. Plus I decided I don't really like a total fine fescue lawn, too whispy. I am going to use some of the new poa trivialis cultivars this fall after I roundup the small amounts of fine fescue. I plan on documenting that little adventure. My front yard took a brown patch hit this summer, after I renovated about 800 square feet. I plan on posting this fall after I overseed it and renovate a few small areas to show all these KBG lovers that Tall fescue can look pretty good.

In central California Tall Fescue is the recommended grass by the advisor for the University of Calif. It is a cool season grass which is green all year but summer is it's dormant season . For directions on putting in Tall Fescue see the University of California's web site UCIPM and look for the turf directions...I followed the directions and have put a few lawns in with good results.

I purchased the vigoro contractor mix. Big mistake. It feels like you're walking on straw. Came in nice until I mowed it. Basically looks like a weed field. Pay more, buy Scotts
