Organic Compost - best source

I know this belongs in the composting section, but I'm hoping some organic gardeners can help me find a source of Organic compost.

At the moment I only see big bags at HD, Lowes, etc. of Manure & Soil conditioner. I have a compost heap out back, but it won't be ready for months. So I need some compost for my plants, after they germinate & form true leaves.

Can anyone recommend any solution? I would even be open to organic fertilizer, but I'm not sure what to use.

Thanks

Peaceful World,

I see you are in GA but unsure just how close to Charleston SC you live, or if you have a truck. The city of Charleston does yard waste compost at the Bees Ferry landfill. Cost is 10.00 a ton.

The term "orgaic compost" is an oxymoron since all compost is organic. If what you are looking for is compost that is certified organic it will state that on the label. Whether the bagged compost sold at most of the big box stroes is something worth spending your money on requires much more research since some of those will contain sewage, bio solids.
The current admonition to buy local is a good idea since you should be able to determine what went into the compost somewhat easier.

Ok thanks both of you.

Lander1 - I'm in the ATL metro area, Charleston is very far from here.

kimmsr- Thanks for the clarification. I'm looking for some that has none of the things you mentioned, nor commercial dairy cow waste.

I will try a local source & ask them what's in it.

Well than your in luck. These will be the people that you want to go talk with/buy things from. They have a big organic farm and sell lot of great products at good prices. Get some Azomite, one of my fav garden products. They my have compost to sell you, if not can tell you what you need to do.

Wow Lander1. That place looks great, with a lot to offer. Atlanta is HUGE & that is about an hour or more from me. I'm in the Marietta area or NW & Newnan is SW.

How did you find them? If I could find a place like this in the NW part of the metro area, it would help with gas.

I found Country Gardens Farm doing a search for Azomite in the Southeast. My sons gf lives in Smyrna and when I drive home after my visit I stop in every spring and get a few things and ask about 50 qustions. The family has been organically farmimg for 80 some odd years.

This was on a nother thread on GW.
