Are you wanting to compare the two in terms of anything in particular? I think this mostly depends just on what you personally like better.

I tend to like painted cabinets best, but it's just a personal preference. :)

One thing to keep in mind, painted cabinets, especially distressed ones, tend to be on the higher end of the upgrade spectrum. A good quality painted cabinet should constructed of quality wood as well, it is really just the finish look that is different so personal preference rules on this one..

I think that depends on what stain you are using. Some include Stain and Sealer and come in Gloss, 2 coats done well is very rich looking and easy to care for just like painted cabinets.

The quality of the finish, whether painted or stained, determines its durability. The style and decor of the house and one's personal taste determines which is the better choice for each household.

My husband and I actually used Rustoleum's product Cabinet Transformation that gives the cabinets a stained and natural look. Bit of a process, but they turned out great. Very happy with product!

Painted or stained should be decided by design style only. In other words what color works best with design style you like best. If you work with a certified designer they should be able to steer you in the right direction as well as pull in the right materials and colors for the counter, splash, floor, etc.

A quality painted finish just like a stain should be baked on conversion varnish.

If paint you will need to pay more for high quality solvent based paint that wont dent or chip easily. Paint finishes trending now. Stained wood finishes are more practical, and you can go with a mid grade quality and have great performance for years to come. Plus stain finish will stand the test of time.

I have oak cabinets. The house was built in 2008 but I really do not like the oak. What advice can you give me for the best way to paint them. I would like a mat grey for the cabinets and a blue for the island. Any professionals near Frederick Maryland?

The best finish is conversion varnish however it is expensive and is difficult to apply, Especially to cabinets already installed. Your next bet would be a pre cat-varnish. Last, would be a standard latex or enamel. It would look the best with one of the furniture quality finishes especially the varnish but, you need to hire a professional. Even a licensed painter may not have the skill level to apply these finishes. You need a licensed painter with cabinet refinishing experience. You should know the grain will show through with all finishes on oak. Your kitchen sure looks like Maple in the picture though.

If by paint you mean hosehold latex paint then, no painting maple is very easy. You should use a primer and if you can spray your doors they will look a lot nicer. Maple does not show grain so it is the ideal wood to paint. Varnish is much more difficult including paint colored varnish. I'm saying you couldn't figure it out but it should really be left for the professionals.
