It is a nobile/softcane Dendrobium which normally blooms in Spring from nodes along the pseudobulb//cane. Maybe that is a node near the fifth leaf from the top in the pic.

do they normally produce "suckers" I hate to think the root is springing up from the dirt the clay pot is 5.5"

They have specific routine through the year.
"rest" in winter
Flower in Spring
Grow new pseudobulbs in summer from nodes at the base of the pseudobulbs.
Mature pseudobulbs in Autumn.
They are Not tropical. They have to be taken up to altitude in Hawaii to get them to bloom.

Too much water at the wrong time might make them (sucker) produce keikis instead of flowers.

Lots of info in past threads. Beginners orchids here, a bit more difficult in climates with real winters.

Should have mentioned that no orchids that I know...sucker..in the sense that certain plants send up babies from roots away from the plant.
