orchid help!!

Alright, So I've inherited an orchid. We had a large press event for my work and the orchids were purchased as centerpieces. At the end we could take them if we wanted (which was better than just letting them get thrown away!)I have no idea what kind of orchid it is...I've never had any experience with these plants and where it was taken and not purchased it's species is a mystery. It's purple.

It has now been gracing my office for close to a month with no problems, though now the lower flowers are starting to wilt. At the same time the lower flowers are wilting new buds at the top did bloom. My office has been fine for other plants - I have large windows with direct and indirect light and one opens so fresh air can circulate. Aside from the wilting flowers the plant overall seems healthy.

It's also potted in this odd mulchy-type stuff...It's not something I've ever seen before and it's kind of hard to describe...I wasn't sure if this was normal or if it was done for show and it needs to be re-potted.

Any help anyone can give me on identifying the type of orchid I have (I'm more than happy to photograph it), whether or not the flower wilting is just the natural passage of blooms, what to do about re-potting or anything else would be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to see it die, it really is beautiful.
