Renovating poor lawn

Hello from the HOT Memphis area.

Moved into a house this spring which has a very sad lawn - spotty, very compacted, lots of weeds (and moles/voles, but that is another subject.) I am wanting to bring in some good top soil and seed in spots in combo with aerating and overseeding the whole yard - about .6 acre. Want to do the work myself and was thinking about approaching it in stages because it is a large job - for example, trying to get a good establishment along the borders of sidewalk and driveway and fill in from there over the next year or so. What is the best order in which to do this, meaning spread soil, aerate and seed or visa versa? Suggestions for grass type - mixed sun and shade with 5 very large trees, a row of crepe myrtles and not much else right now? Appreciate any help you can offer. Really don't want to waste money and time and want a pretty yard to build on!

Thanks,

Mel J
