Please help sick Phalaenopsis

I inherited a very small (about 7 inches from the tip of a leaf, across the center of the plant to the tip of the opposite leaf) Phalaenopsis last Spring (a year ago). It had a bloom spike in full bloom when I got it. After the blooming was done, it got at least 3 new leaves over the Summer. Now it is blooming again. It has one spike full of blooms and as yet unopened buds and another spike is emerging (about 1 inch long now). Now, the problem I have is that the lower leaves are turning yellow/brown and dying. I have lost 3 leaves so far and don't know why. Doesn't make sense that it is blooming nicely and yet it appears to be sick because the leaves are dying. This is the only orchid I've ever had and I would very much like to save it. I inherited it from my mother when she passed away last Spring. So, besides that I really like the plant, it has an emotional connection for me too. It is planted in orchid bark with a little bit of sphagnum moss mixed in. It is on a table infront of a S,SW window. However when the afternoon sun comes around, I close a lacy curtain to keep the hot afternoon sun from burning my plants. Not sure what other information to give, but please help and ask any questions that you want. Thank you, in advance, for helping me to save this orchid.
