Well done, indeed.

A friend Marianne died yesterday, she was a part time columnist for our local newspaper. She wrote the following two weeks ago as her final column.

" A day spent with loved ones makes it easy to count our blessings and be thankful for things too numerous to count. We are thankful for having lived our lives on the prairie...we can see a long way in every direction."

"We look toward a calm and brilliant sunrise and consider it a message that God is in heaven so all is right with the world. Should there be a dramatic and colorful sunset we are free to claim the display as a message that our job is well done."

Marianne was 78 and had battled cancer for two years but lost. Well done indeed, Marianne.

I like that. Being an Appalachian foothill girl, flatlands make me nervous and I have never liked them. That quote will make me look at the prairie in a better way.

I never think of the prairie as being flat, it's got ridges and gullies and lots of streams and rivers which all seem to be at the bottom of the hillside. To me, it's just... grassy. Except that isn't quite true, there really are trees and shrubs and vines and so on. They don't stand in your face, but they exist in subdued way. I think it's just that when you stand on top of a hill and look to the horizon, the in-between seems so very level twixt here and there, and the there is so very far away. I'm not uncomfortable in prairieland, but I like being among forests and tall waterfalls more.

Gandle, she sounds like a lovely lady who will be missed in this world. I hope her columns have been saved, I suspect they would make a good book.

The quote from your friend has given me a differant outlook on prairies also. I'm a mountain person.
