That appears to be an elder (Sambucus) species. I don't know which ones would grow in your area. Just a hint for future postings. It is actually quite hard to id plants from close ups unless they are very distinctive. It is really helpful to have foliage and some indication of size and habit of growth too. You can post more than one photo at a time on here. Flora

I'd guess Eriogonum. The Sambucus we commonly grow here have creamy-yellow flowers.

Flora is right, though; an overall habit shot plus a shot of the foliage would help considerably.

Joe

Flora, I take your point, and it's a good one, though please explain how to post more than one photo at a time here -- I've only seen how to do one.

This shrub is easily 8 feet tall, very multi-trunked and bushy, with a fairly erect habit. It was in fairly heavy shade so the foliage might not have photographed well. Will try to take another shot and post it here -- if anyone can explain how to upload it here when it's not hosted as a URL elsewhere on the web!

For what it probably is...

Thanks, bboy -- the flowers in pictures of that plant look exactly like the flowers in mine.

Thanks, too, for responding, Flora & Joe.

jane socal - if you upload your pics to photobucket or similar each one will automatically be given several codes which appear below the pic. If you copy the 'html' code you can paste it straight into your post. Just do it for each picture you want to put in your post. You will see the actual pics in your post when you click the preview button.

flora (feeling smug about the elder)

Flora, you deserve to feel smug!

I'm well aware of photo sites, but use Flickr, and don't post anything unless it's suitably interesting or aesthetically pleasing IMO. This photo wasn't (though now that I know what it is, I'll want to return later to photograph the elderberries ripening). I suppose it's worth creating a separate account for the purpose you suggest - just haven't done it.
