Sheet mulching and ants

I'm thinking about sheet mulching an area of my garden over the winter to kill out all of the weeds and improve the soil and drainage of the bed. Since I live in southwest Louisiana fire ants and Argentinian ants are a constant problem. Every time I've used cardboard or paper as a mulch I've ended up with unseen nests underneath. I've used coffee grounds to prevent the nests with limited success but since I'm going with a larger area (15' X 15') this time I'm asking for some suggestions that might be more successful in keeping the ants from building up during the winter.

Thanks
Dwight
