Golden Orfe spawning

I am so excited and had to share. My golden orfe spawned yesterday. These fish are about 9-10 years old and around 18 inches. It's been amazing to watch them grow as when we first bought them, they were about 2 inches long. We had some very warm temps last weekend so I cleaned up the pond and then started the skimmer and waterfall. They started paying alot of attention to the skimmer box intake and for 2 days, 1-3 would go inside it. Not easy to get fish that size out without hurting them. So I devised a netting to put in front of the skimmer opening to keep them out and the next day it and surrounding area was loaded with spawn. If these eggs survive, I will be overrun with orfe!

Just had to share.

jan,

how long did it take your orfe to get to that size. mine were about the same size when i got them 3 yrs ago and are now about 14" long. haven't had any spawning up to now but i did see them chasing around since we've had this warmer weather so maybe they are getting mature enough to spawn.

Craig,

It took them 9-10 years to get this size. This is the first spring they've ever shown an interest in spawning. They didn't chase each other around, just kept wanting to go into the skimmer box and once I put the screening over the opening, they hung around it and spawned on the screening. It was nothing like koi or goldfish spawning.

What I've read about them is that they prefer dark "caves" to spawn in (maybe that's why they wanted in the skimmer box) and must have moving water. Can't prove any of it by me cause this is a first for us.
