Identify vine w/fruit?

We are slowly uncovering our 40 acres in SW Washington from years of neglect and blackberries. Today my husband found this strange looking vegetable/fruit vine and I've spent the last couple of hours trying to find it online and in my gardening books, to no avail...
When cut open it has sections and a sweet smelling juice. The spikes on the outside are soft as well as the rind. Didn't want to take the risk of tasting since you never know...
