If it is EDPM rubber roofing membrane, I have used it before. I built the pond and installed the liner. then I scrubbed it with soap and water to clean the talc off and rinse well. Once I filled the pond, I treated the pond with a very heavy dosage of potassium permanganate. I had no problems at all with it.

I have installed many ponds using roofing liner, without mishap or any dreadful things happening to the ponds or the inhabitants of the ponds.
You will probably read some horror tales about fish dying, plants curling up and frogs with two heads. None of these perils and curses, as far as I and thousands of other pond owners are concerned, happened because EPDM roofing liner was used instead of so called, "Fish Safe" EPDM liner.
This subject comes up for debate, on this forum every year and in the end you will be the one to decide what or what not to use!

The roofing liner you saw at HD, if it is black, smells like rubber and is approximately an 1/16 of an inch thick, then it is a safe bet it's EPDM.

As far as the talcum powder goes, just hose it off the best you can, you will not get it all, but that's okay, it won't harm anything unless you breath it in!
Potassium Permanganate can be dangerous stuff to deal with and should only be used if you know exactly what you are doing with it.
Used at the wrong dosage, it can wipe out the pond's fish population in the matter of a few hours.
In my opinion you do not require to use it on EPDM liner whether it is mark as "Fish Safe" or un- marked roofing liner.

Horton, my only concern is that I did not see EPDM on the liner at Menards. I will look a bit closer...and maybe contact the company who manufactured it to get clarification.

Listen to Horton. It's the same advice that I would have given you. I have used RV rubber roofing in a 4x4' lotus trough. The mosquito fish and snails are still alive.

I bought some of the rubber roofing material your talking about from Menards in northern Illinois. Mine came with a tag on it that said EPDM. I think the add in their flyer also claimed EPDM. They should be able to give you that info at the store if you want to be sure. I didn't use it in my pond for the same concerns. Some the pond dealers claimed it wasn't the same (I guess you could expect that), others said it was ok to use. I ended up using mine for backing under parts of the pond and falls. If I had known then what I know now I would have used it and saved myself a bundle.
