Ponds & Aquatic Plants

controlling algae in ponds

If I put blooming lavender stems in my pond constantly will they help control the algae. I cant afford to use pumps or filters. I will have oxygenating plants, and some algea eaters. And I am using one of those kiddie pools you can get at Wal*Mart, so it isnt a big pond, it is tiny. And are there any other organic remedies for keeping your pond algea free and water clean?

Hi soccerguynn, barley straw is a good organic option for controlling algae. As the straw breaks down in the water it produces a natural algacide.

Be careful with kiddie pools as some contain chemicals in the liner which are harmless to humans but toxic to fish and plants.

I think barley straw needs to be put in moving water if it's to work at all.

For a still pond with no pumps, the more plants, the better.
