I would like to start a couple of mimosa trees from seeds, but I need to know the right way to start them. Can anyone tell me the best way and time to start these seeds?

do not let seed dry out.... pour hot water over seed before sowing.... lightly cover seed soil temp 70F & takes 14 days to germinnate...

OR, (being that you're in zone 9)

You could simply throw them down in a sunny spot and stand back. My grandpa had one when I was a kid, and volunteer seedlings came up by the kajillions. When he passed away 4 years ago, I inherited some of his other plants, and somehow, a mimosa seed was a stowaway in the soil. I now am the proud owner of a 7 foot tall mimosa tree.

I've grown them for a couple of years. Out of 20 seeds planted in a regular flat, maybe 4 will grow. My wife is from the philippines. This past summer we went back and I looked all over for them. Finally found some in a friends yard. Noticed they close and drop their leaves quicker there than here in the states. The children in the philippines like to stomp them and watch them close up. My wife says she liked to do the same when a child. Wonderful plants. Grew one for my mother. It survived for a couple of years. The seeds are cheap enough to plant some every summer. Planted one outside, and it made it till frost.

ive got 6 babies i started in dec now bout 6 inches
so cute the lil leaves close at night !
i soaked them in nearly boiling water for 20 min.,
then planted them in a 2 liter bottle that i cut
the top off of and made a slit to slide it back on
to hold in the moisture.(leave cap off for ventalation.
planted 4 in each bottle and they all sprouted but one.
they sprouted in less then 5 days .
i have some extra seeds for a sasbe, just e-mail me if interested.

Dawn, I was just searching this wonderful site for Mimosa seeds and this post came up. Do you happen to have any seeds left? I would sure love to try some. When I lived in Texas, zone 7 these things were a pain and borderline on being invasive. If one person had just one in their yard the whole block had seedlings coming up everywhere. Constantly I was having to pull the seedlings out of my flower beds. If you miss one and it gets very big the harder they are to pull out. Just a warning and note about my experience with them. I don't mean to discourage anyone from having them. If you want one go for it, just beware of any problems you can end up with by having them.
