Pruning Party Jan 12

Hi - a few of you may live near enough to Sacramento to come join us for our pruning party next Saturday. It's a good day of camaraderie, with homemade soup and chili for lunch (and goodies, too). It's a good learning opportunity and a chance to work with other like-minded souls in a good cause. You can take home cuttings, too.

It's Saturday, Jan 12, 9-3, in the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden at 1000 Broadway in the Historic City Cemetery. Rain cancels - our rain date is Jan 26. Several of you already are part of our extended family of volunteers, and drive up from the Bay Area or from other places not too far away. The cemetery is beautiful every day of the year.

If you want to call me with questions, my cell is 715-7294. Sacramento's area code is 916.

I live about 30 miles east of Stockton, so climate should be pretty darned close to Sacramento. I don't prune until about the 2nd week of February, as I thought pruning should be done when threats of freezing were about over. Do I wait too long? Should I (or could I be) pruning earlier without any possible negative ramifications? I do have mostly moderns.

Freezing just isn't an issue with roses in Sacramento, Sunset zone 14, which gets down to the upper 20s. I've never seen any new growth damaged by the cold. The Sacramento rose society just pruned all of the moderns in McKinley Park last Saturday so that must apply to moderns as well as antiques. In general, we stop pruning when the sap starts rising and the buds start to push, which is around Valentine's Day but some years is earlier. If we waited till February to start, we'd never get done!
