I think the two materials would look wonderful. Both are natural products and would be harmonious. I'm wondering why you've chosen the dining room to have the tiles, though. I think they'd be better suited to a kitchen or hallways. However, without seeing your floor plan and knowing more about your decor and the location and your family etc. etc. I can't really say more.

Just be really careful that the tiles are level and smooth because in a dining room you have a lot of chairs with a lot of legs and you want the chairs and the table to be situated securely on them without wobbling. Chairs move back and forth a lot and need to sit flat on the floor no matter where they end up.

Cynthia's points are well taken. Unless you are in Utah please consider using the slate/bluestone in your mudroom and kitchen. A dining room calls for a more measured finish on the floors. If your floor plan allows and you have a rustic program going on you may consider the bluestone at the main entry into the kitchen - breakfast room - mudroom, but not in the dining room.

Am I missing something here? What does Utah have to do with this? :) Very curious! But thanks for your support.

Thinking those magnificent ski lodges in Park City, etc... where the chic Adirondack look presides. If it is a 'normal' home, no bluestone in DR.

This is the closest photo I can find that shows a good example of the use of the two floor types, but in reverse of what i was I was hoping to use.

The layout (which is in the final design phase) is as follows: a central doorway to a period home opens onto a wide hallway with medium to dark wide oak floors. The master bedroom (with ensuite, walk ins) is on the left (off a hall way door) and equally opposite on the right hand side through another door is the sitting room/guest room.

Walking further along, past the stairs to the upstairs kids' rooms on the right, an arch at the end of the hall way opens onto the dining on the right and floor-to-ceiling windows on the left opening onto a courtyard the same proportions as the dining room. Bo the dining and the courtyard are in big bluestone tiles. Past the dining, the kitchen (on the right) and the lounge (on the left) transition back to the oak floors.

I hope that paints you a better picture.

Yes it does. I would do the kitchen and the lounge in the bluestone and all the rest in the wood. In the lounge you can put a nice thick wool area rug to define your seating area. I do not recommend the stone in the dining room at all. It sounds like a beautiful house!
