Does heptacodium sucker?

A couple of years ago, we planted a heptacodium (seven son's flower) near our pond. Our thought was that it would be a multi-stemmed tree, i.e., a few trunks, growing taller than wide. At this point it has three main stems, all about 7' high, & definitely seems to want to grow taller than wider.

We have now seen a couple specimens in an arboretum that looked more like a lilac bush, about as wide as high & very dense. Does this plant eventually sucker & become reminiscent of a lilac? B/c if it does, we need to relocate it. It's not in a spot which we desire that type of appearance, nor in which we want to do frequent maintenance such as removing suckers. We have other places for it in our yard, if that's its natural habit.

Thanks for your comments,

Randy W.
