The moyesii seem to be at least as confused in trade as the spinossisimas. I bought this as 'Geranium' locally, and don't have any reason to believe it mislabelled at this point. I don't know how easy it is to root. I've been meaning to take a cutting myself because it is in a sort of strange place and moving it is going to require some sort of large, mechanical object.

BTW, the pot label was something like Monrovia. It was *not* from a rose nursery, but a shrub wholesaler.

I got mine at Pickering but was told by a rose expert that it wasn't Geranium. I guess the Moyesiis are a little difficult to ID.

thanx mendocino rose, that's what i was afraid of. geranium is more red than orange. I guess i need to find someone who really has geranium and root a cutting. i see that vintage has it in their inventory too, but not for sale this season. or, my other alternative is to buy it in bloom to be certain that it is geranium before i purchase it.

I just got my geranium from Pickering last year and is hasn't bloomed yet. Now I'm wondering what it will look like. The bush is very attractive so far, so as long as it isn't a horrible color I think I'll be happy with it.

Well, my "Geranium" bloomed, and it's hot pink. And I don't think it's even a moyesii--it looks like it might be r. forrestiana. A pretty rose, but not what I was expecting--and it does clash a wee bit in the bed of reds & other hot colors.

HelpMeFind says that Geranium is thornless-can anyone confirm this? That would tell me for certain that this isn't Geranium--I've got the scars to prove it!

At least one 'Geranium' will be for sale at the Wooster, Oh, Garden of Roses of Legend and Romance open garden on June 13th. Jeri has done a beautiful catalog, and I'll be posting a link to it as soon as it is online.

I have a very small own root from Vintage that appears thornless so far. Young plant material can be deceiving until it produces a legitimate new basal. I can't comment on the bloom, as the plant hasn't yet, but Vintage describes it as saturated Scarlet.

Not only is this rose very thorny, but the buds look almost like a moss rose--lightly covered with little bristles with a bead on the end. The photos on HMF show smooth buds on Geranium.

Sounds like a swing and a miss.

thanx for the update everyone -- i still haven't been able to find this rose for sale -- even vintage doesn't have it! :(

so if anyone has the "real" rose and would be willing to share a cutting or two, i'd truly be grateful.

I have a rose labeled geranium from pickering. I was expecting a red and got a pink bloom and I don't mean sort of pink but real pink. I also have r. moyessi and waiting for it to bloom as it was a low grade. The bushes look exactly the same, and are winter hardy for me - which is good.

In the gardens is a Jubilee Walk , done in red white and blue plants , trees , flowers. I have admired this pillarbox red wild looking rose for many years. When I saw a rose looking similar I bought it , but when I checked with the head gardener of Mountstewart ,Phil Rollinson, I discovered it was the same rose !!Rosa Moyesii Gernamium .
The colour is REAL red !! it has a 'relaxed' habit and produces a large number of simple five petaled fragrant flowers, the foliage is ferny with soft moss rose style thorns.
I have tried to order repeats , but all stock is finished so I shall try to take cuttings .
I dont know is I can send any to you ?
But perhaps you have already been successful ?

Antique Rose emporium has Eddie's Crimson which is close also there is one called Highdownensis that is also close. Both have red blossoms.

I love all the spinossisimas , although I only have four or so. I plan on getting more as they hopefully become available. So far I have Dominie Sampson, Petite pink Scotch, the species, and Stanwell Perpetual. Well I also have Harison's Yellow, and Father Hugo, I think they count. But I would love Dorenboos, Double Pimpinellifolia, Altaica, Aicha, R. alabukensis, Double Yellow and Geranium. R. alabukensis May not count but the leaves are ferny, and the blooms are a beautiful yellow. I still would like it, regardless. So there's my wishlist for roses in the spinossisimas. I hope everyone get's the roses they want, and I hope one day I'll get these as well :)

AnneCecilia, yours looks like the actual 'Geranium' cultivar of R. moyesii. It's RED. Not pink.

Anne cecilia, your rose has the most amazingly elegant foliage I've seen in years. The negative space between each leaf adds to the total sum of its' perfection. Nice blooms too.

Anne Celia, yours looks exactly the rose I remember seeing in the NZ species rose garden overseen by Daphne Whitford-Smith. I coveted this sweetie then, and I still do now.

I've not seen a pink 'Geranium', but a neighbour has a full grown one, here below.

Might be the moyesii cultivar 'Highdownensis'...which has a definite cerise colouration.

sure that isn't a Rugosa? I have one that same color..it always wants to make a hedge. If a keep it dead headed it blooms continually.

Not a rugosa. In person, Deborah you would see the difference in foliage that is not as obvious in a photo.

OK..I tried to see on the photo..couldn't tell..similar flower though.

I think growers are screwing up on cloning or breeding..plants I get aren't like old ones I've had. In all different types of plants too. Just recently..Ribes. New one is nothing like the 20 old one. Mr. Lincoln ain't the same either..another nursery worker I talked had noticed this too. But not with all growers.

Losing original vigor and habits or color etc.
