Started in pots this year and in the ground last year.....last year they took FOREVER toget started..but I have them in part shade! So....this year I started them in pots and they are already like 6-8" tall and ready to start climbing...and I have another 3 weeks until they go outside! I planted like.....15 seeds and they ALL are growing!!!

i think germination is a whole lot easier inside ,but you have to time it right,otherwise you will have a bunch of morning glories inside looking for a place to climb.thats what happened to me

I do both and have good results. Some things like Moon Flowers and some of the Japanese MG's that are slower to bloom always get started inside. This year has been really screwy with the weather and I haven't been able to direct sow or put any of the ones I started inside in the yard yet. I have some MG's that have started blooming inside. The flowers are pretty but a bit dwarfed and they really want to be outside already. Come on spring!!!

Well....with our weather being 60 during the days and like 40 at night...I planted a few of the morning glorys I started indoors in a flower box right outside the windows! It faces sun from Noon-dusk so I figured with it being out of the wind...why not? I did put little stakes and at dusk I put a towel over them! I just put them in today and they loved the transplant! They are about 6" tall and look ready to climb in a week or so! I figured... I had a few extra so why not try and see what happens! I will let you know how it goes!P.S. I am zone 4 by state but in our area, being right outside the city we are almost considered a zone 5.

I'm in 7a and your temps are significantly warmer than ours! Our highs have only been in the mid 40's. What a screwed up winter and spring we've had.

I vote for starting inside. If they start getting really long and crawly, I just pinch them back....they'll just bush out on you. Worked much better for me...both with germination and growth.

I've got some started on my windowsill here at work. Rigged up a fish-line trellis that is nearly invisible to the nekkid eye. The rest will be started via Winter Sowing method probably beginning or mid-May, and tossed down by the mailbox. I had good results starting them that way last year in near-mud.
