Mine grew fine in cheap $1 bag of potting soil from the dollar store, though I'm sure most would not recommend it.

I think I spent more doing it from seed than I would have just buying them from the nursery.

I buy Premier Pro Mix BX in the compressed bales to save money. Fortunately they are available locally, so I don't have to pay shipping. I use plug sheets and seedling trays instead of peat pellets. Seedling trays and plugsheets are the most efficient way to start large numbers of plants at one time. If you notice the seedlings for sale in garden centers, you will see that they are seldom in peat pellets.

I have a quick question in reference to seed planting. I recently purchased a package of creeping thyme seeds. I am planning on planting them in an area of my yard that gets good sunlight and water and drainage, but is over grown with weeds. grass just doesn't seem to take in that area. What would be my best bet for getting the area ready for seeding. thanks in central NJ
