You don't say what you are growing. Vegetable seeds I would direct sow this time of year, Most flower seeds I would start in flats or pots for better control. Al

Oh... that would help I guess. I am talking about annuals. Various zinnias, marigolds, etc. Just the basic annuals. Thanks

Spring and summer sowing using the winter sowing method in containers.

Remember, as the temps warm, moisture and baby fry become the enemy. Winter sowing containers help control that.

Bakemom, So you do use the milk jugs. Do you take the lids off during the daytime? This is so interesting. I did the winter sowing with great success, but to put them in the milk jugs now I was a bit hesitant. Tell me more if you can. Thanks so much.

I've used milk jugs just as I did for wsing, open flats in a plastic-jacketed 2'x3'x5' plant rack, and open seeding in pots successfully this spring. The key is to do it in a shaded location so you don't cook your sprouts. I have all my stuff set up on the north side of my garage in a location that gets no direct sunlight (except perhaps at 6-8 am) but has good diffuse light all day long. I do all my stem propagation here too - it works very well.

Zinnias and marigolds are pretty forgiving though - you can also seed them directly in the garden if you're good about watering. Me, I'm kind of lazy, so I find that I have a better rate of success if I get them to develop a reasonable root system before plopping them in the ground.

i started all mine in pots..and they;re all on my porch, few in back yard..need more pots, dirt..i'm starting, morning glorys, wild flowers, zinna;s, moonflower,hibiscus(pink),...etc.
