It certainly looks like intentional markings to me. If I were you, I would contact Dr. Barry Fell. Doing a search for his name and the Epigraphic Museum would probably turn up a way to contact him. Several inscriptions with markings similar to yours have been found in various places in New England. Good luck and don't give up!!

That's too bad!! I knew he must have been getting quite old. I just did a google search for "epigraphic society" and came up with lots of hits. Surely someone is carrying on Dr. Fell's work.

There is a man at The Connecticut Department of Transportaion Office of Policy and Planning ask for the man in charge of Archeological site reviews for DOT projects. His frist name is Bob.
He knows rocks and has contacts. I don't want to put his name out on the forum with out asking him.

You should be able to send the picture to any university and get an answer... IMO it's plow marks or shovel cuts, but I'm a Bioarchaeologist and not much into lithics (only 4 years of regular archaeology behind me before I specialized, although i still had to deal with lithics). If you want I could pass this on to my husband. One quick way to tell that it's not old is the fact there is no discoloration in the cuts. They would be the same color as the cortex or exterior of the rock which has been in the soil (or out in the weather). Another thing is the figure you are seeing is not a NA (Native American) design of any culture. You will get those pock marks that make the head from striking the rock with a shovel though. I can't really tell from the pic but it looks like limestone (or sandstone) to me? Just curious about the last part :)

I'm too was little bit sceptical about those scratces being authentic carvings because of the 'too fresh' look.

Hey, in another 10 000 years, they will be old enough to fool some scientists and will be pronounced to be a NA design of XXI century :-)
In a mean time this rock is sitting on a my front steps and I enjoy it every day regardless of the age.

Hey, it never hurts to ask, right? The front step sounds like a great place. Unfortunately, we just moved and sveral rocks were left behind. He collects them and we just didn't have the time or energy to move them all!

I mean to share this information for stones created by the will of nature untouched by mans hand. This concept not having to be of archeological value can be as equally stimulating for the brain when reflecting upon stones.
In this manner you can further enjoy the stone on a display stand of some sort. Adding an expanded vocabulary as how one SEE's a stone as an artform using new words barrowed from other cultures is exciting for me. Word like "Suiseki" . Asian concepts have a knack for creating magical moments for me. Hope they do for you as well.
