searching for a specific fish

I'm posting both here and in the aquarium forum so some folks may see it both places. My pond is asleep for the winter and I'm back to enjoying my aquarium and watching the snowflakes drift down. Now to my challenge...My local fish store has an indoor pond with a 'slough' of koi in it as you go in. Among all these big critters, I find myself charmed with a single light yellow-gold Koi which has trebled in size as I've visited over the past few months.

My lowest pond (2 tier) is only @800 gallons in which I already have 4-5 goldfish (comets)...reluctant to add Koi which might (1)get too big for this limited space (1) eat/dig in my water lilies. BUT I'd like to locate/find a goldfish of a similar 'light gold' coloration. If you have favorite fish suppliers you could recommend in my search I'd appreciate your input. If not allowed to make recommendations via postings, please do email me directly.

Thanks,

Will

Most pet stores have a tank or tub full of feeder goldfish. There is usually quite a bit of color variations in these tanks and the fish are small but very cheap. Ask to take a look at them in a few different stores and you may find what you are looking for. You may have to buy a netfull to get the one you want but I am sure that is cheaper than having some shipped. I bought a dozen for 2 dollars and actually took home about 20 with a couple being a light gold color. Good luck

koi should be fine in that pond
yes they will go after your lillies but no more so then your goldfish, they are all related carp species
you may want to keep it in an aquarium for the winter and put it in the pond in the spring, that much of a tempo drop could shock the fish

What the heck, go see if they will sell you that particular koi. Sounds like you like that fish and you'll probably regret it if you don't. You can always up the maintenance on your pond

In my experience that light yellow gold color in goldfish and often in koi is transitory. I keep trying to acquire a pale yellow koi and it never works out. The color in a goldfish (comet) is measured in days rather than weeks. Sandy

Have you thought about adding Golden Orfes???

In looking up golden orfes, I don't think my pond would be big enough. Dimensions are roughly 13'x6' with shelfes at either end so only the mid secton is really 4' deep.
I'll watch for other suggestions and, as mentioned above, perhaps watch the feeder tank.
Not really in a hurry really as my wife was trying to move one of my 2 28gal tanks and the stand collapsed. the 3 large orandas from the broken tank were rescued and are enjoying my mixed ank but it is a bit overpopulated right now..
    Thanks for the ideas group,
    Wil

I got a young Koi that was white. Just what I wanted. Well now it is a beautiful butter yellow. At least it was when I covered the ponds for winter! wonder what it will look like come spring? A richer golden yellow? I hope! There are a few goldies out there that stay yellow but no many.

Golden orfes like to jump out of the water to catch bugs so with a smaller pond, they may jump out and hit the sides out of the water.

Like aquawise, I have seen white koi and goldfish that look a pale yellow to me.

6 Orfes for the past 4 years - no jump outs!!
They are nearly a foot long now, won't reach the size of a Koi.

i know iam in brisbane australia,
but i have a fantail pale gold that is about 10-12 cm in length and shows no signs at all of changing colour , it is the palest gold all over. it almost has a wren on its head.
i have had it for 8mths now so i don't believe it will change color now. i have had goldfish before black & gold and they do seem to change color, fairly quickly after going into an outside pond...

    regards mazela
don't know about koi at all. not allowed to have them in qld.. australia

Will, there are some specific species of yellow goldfish available, but not common in the USA. Sent you a e-mail as to one place in the USA they can be found.
