Gardening with Stone

Mortar Selection

I've recently built a drystack retaining garden wall approximately 2 feet tall and would like to mortar the capstones for stability. Can anyone recommend a mortar type I should use for this? I've read that Type-M mortar mix is recommended, but I can't find it in pre-mix bags at either of the local Lowe's or Home Depot.

Additionally, if anyone has any experience or insight into this phase of my project would be greatly appreciated.

Chippate, I've used Type-S for a mortered 18" rock wall. My research suggested that, and I found it at HD. My concern with your idea is that by only mortering the cap stones, you will creating 2 layers of solid mass sitting on a less stable base. I think it would be better to find very heavy cap stones that don't move much. --Kris
