Many people have a problem using Kudzu in the compost because of its reputation for spreading because they do not start to understand how the plant spreads. A very aggressive root system does not always equate to stems that will root and as long as the stems do not root they can be put in your compost. Ivy, "Hedera", should not be composted unless it is buried deeply in a very hot compost pile because it does root along the stem, but Morning Glory, "Ipomoea", can be composted even in a cold pile, provided it is just the stems and leaves and no roots are attached.

When in doubt, make sure it's dead before adding it to the pile. FYI, kudzu has made its way to the Borough of Queens in New York City. Scary, aint it?

Yes, bob64, Kudzu IS scary. I'm pretty sure if you stand in it to long you'll disappear- in the summmer it takes over entire counties in just a few weeks. Which is why it might not be the best choice for composting if its not completely "cooked" first.

I remember living in Georgia and there was a stand of kudzu in the vacant lot behind my yard. I dug it out of my yard, but it would literally grow a foot a day and it was all I could do to keep up with keeping it out of my yard. Those were my pre-organic days. I found that Ortho brush killer worked pretty well on it. But, man, I did dream about it.

someone mentioned composting English Ivy. First they put it in a black plastic garbage bag and left it in the summer sun to cook thoroughly. Might be worth a try with kudzu.

Kudzu is worse than bindweed or any other weed you can thing of. If I was going to compost kudzu, I'd boil it first. I have a rusty old pot I keep to boil weeds in on my grill for when I compost them.

Just hot compost it and you'll be fine. I have made 150 cubic feet of kudzu compost and I never had any sprout either in my yard or in the garden. You can also just chop it up with a leaf shredder and till it into the garden. It will not sprout. The seeds only have a 10% germination rate.
