Gophers eating shrub roots

I have a Snowmound spirea that has been doing very well until about a week ago and I noticed little mounds of dirt(gophers) around the flower bed where it is planted. I need to dig the plant out and put it in a wire basket to protect it but right now I'm afraid that in this heat it will die if dug up. If I leave it in the ground, the gophers will kill it. Do I prune 1/3 of it back to transplant it or most of it? This plant is about 4' tall and 4' wide and I don't want to kill it. Please help!
