If these are daylilies, digging them out is the only mechanical way to be rid of them.

Exactly - shovel required...You won't remove them by pulling at the tops.

Sometimes it's easier to pop things out with a pitchfork. If you have one, try both to see which tool you prefer for the job in the soil conditions you have.
