yes and no. Simpliest solution is to put the fertilizer below the root zone of the grass. You can punch a hole with a piece of rebar, use a spade bit drill or an auger. I find that a metal rod and a hammer works as well as anything.

My brother in law has many Mulberry Trees grown on his property.
He likes them because they attract alot of birds.He lives
in zone 5 Massachusetts and they seem to grow relatively fast
(for a hardwood tree). He adds no nutrients but waters alot
the 1st year.
