toro carb help

I have an older toro 624 snow blower. It was running very poorly, would stall easily, get bogged down if the choke was open at all. I had to run it with the choke closed for the most part. I decide to look into cleaning the carb. I took out the screw that is in the bottom of the float bowl ( not super dirty) then the float bowl fell off and a little shinny metal thing did as well. i have attached a photo. what is this thing and where does it go? I think this is a Mitsubishi engine. thanks

It looks like a float valve from a Tecumseh engine.It would be best to remove the float pin and float. The little wire slides through under the tab on the float and the valve up into a small well up inside the carb. The wire should point towards the choke end of the carb. Re-install w/ float and pin and install the float bowl w/ the flat spot below the area that has the valve. Be sure fuel is fresh and that the small holes in the bowl nut (main jet) are clean.

Here's the Tecumseh manual. If in fact it is a Mitzie- like on a Power SHift, post the model # from the back tag on the machine (5 digits)

it does have a power shift on it. (that is broken as well!)

Shows as a Tecumseh on toro.com parts look up. Power shifts are great!

yeah, I looked it up on there as well. I believe you are correct about the part. Do you know anywhere they might be a picture of the way that it is suppose to go in? it looked like it would attached to the float bowl. but does it aim up, down? the spring flops around all over the place so it is not straight for click it in place kinda thing. anyideas how to fix the power shift?

It rests above the float pointing up, attached to the float as I described on the pad near the pin that attaches the float. I believe the manual in the above link would have pics.
What is wrong with the power shift? Have you had it long? It has been a while for me. The theory is that each time the power shift is activated, the wheel direction alternates between forwards and rearward. A slight lifting from the operator is required at the same time. There are adjustments. I'm guessing that at the parts look up site, they would have a service manual, and at the very least an owners manual which would cover set up adjustments.

youre right, there was a pretty decent picture on the manual of the carb. We shall see if I can get it together though. The power drive will not change positions anymore. Stopped working on me this year. When I push the shifter lever forward it will not shift the wheels. the pull starter doesnt work either. so much for my free snowblower!
