Caftsman Garage Door Opener Codes won't erase

I have a Craftsman 139.53615SR made in 92. I keep finding the door open at all odd hours of the day. I expect someone has the same code as I do and I changed my remote code. The opener accepted it and it works. The challenge is that I didn't delete all the codes to begin with and I still have the problem. I have held the learn button at the back of my opener for over a minute and the LED never goes out indicating that the codes for the unit have been erased. It is 20 degrees in Colorado right now so I have gone so far as to open the unit and warm it up with a hair dryer. Still no luck. Am I missing something or has my unit started to fail me. Please help.

I found your topic while searching for answers to an identical problem. I think I've found the solution and I hope it's not too late to help you.

While messing around with the unit I bumped the red/white wires that attach through the ceiling to the wall opener. This caused the door to open. In all the years of use, these wires had moved around enough to where they were able to touch each other. The result is that somehow, while they are touching, the security is disabled, allowing other remotes to work on my door. I verified this with my neighbor's remote that was opening my door--while the wires were touching, his remote worked on my door, but when I separated the wires, his stopped working.

Since then I've reset my old remote and haven't come home to find the door open yet. If you still have the opener, inspect the wires. The place where the wires were touching on mine was right by the screwposts on the main opener.

I think your unit is starting to fail by not erasing the memory but tell me please how you changed the code on your remote. Does your remote have dip switches?

My remote does have dip switches. I did modify some of the settings putting it to a new code then I hit the "learn" button on the back of the unit while holding the open button on the remote. The remote works fine. I checked half of the townhome units in my area with the original code from one of my other remotes. I fear that the only way to fix my problem short of buying a new garage door opener will be to find the person with my original code and getting them to change their code. I appreciate any other thoughts that would keep the solution more in my control. Thanks.

If you remember the original settings of those dip switches you could move them back and drive around your townhome units and try opening doors. If they were opening yours you should be able to open theirs.

I have a similar problem, but my GDO don't have dip switches. I just bought a house which had a Craftsman 1/2 HP GDO 139.53681B and they gave me only one remote. I tried to program other remotes (139.53681B) but they didnt programed, so I tried to clear the codes by pressing the learn button on the opener for 6+ seconds, the light goes of but the Im still able to open with the working remote.

i have a craftsman opener and it is ramdomly opening on it's own . do all these openers have dip switches on them and do i have to erase the original factory code first? i do not know the model number off hand but i do know it is only a few years old . thanks

thewilsons_5 I need to totally agree, I have the manual to my old 1992 opener, and it mentions wire shorts or the control panl on the wall being faulty and Mine is opening in 2024! Hope it keeps going!
